From Race chair Matt Stainback:
Hello HYC!
You may recall that we at HYC are the new hosts of the Big Tom City Island Cup. If not, I included my email below so you can refresh. Notably, this was sent on March 3rd, and before our region was hit with this pandemic, and therefore an update is in order. Impressed by the determination to "find a way" that we have seen by the Marine and Launch committees, the Race Committee has taken the same approach. So rather than follow other clubs and fight for space on an already full fall race calendar just so we can run it the same way, we set our sights on finding a new way we can safely enjoy some racing this Spring.
So I am please to announce that with some significant changes, the City Island Cup is still on for June 13th! With the permission of our board, HYC will be waiving the entry fee for participating boats. This will be a just-for fun, free regatta designed to follow proper guidelines. Therefore, all division will be shorthanded, and crew should be only members of the boat's household to facilitate effective social distancing. Racing will be one day only on Saturday, June 13th, with a make-up day on June 14th if racing is cancelled due to weather. There will be no skipper's meeting or after race activities. An addendum to the NOR has been posted on Yachtscoring.
More boats are hitting the mooring field every week, and looking at our Marine calendar most should be in by June 13th. I encourage everyone to sign up for the race. It will be a low-key, fun day on the water and hopefully a welcome reprise from the stresses of our new normal. Plus, it is free! In lieu of an entry fee, we encourage you to consider a donation to a local charity. In lie of an after party, why not order some delicious food to-go from Anne Booth to pick up after the race? We are all in this together, but no one said we can't have a little fun and get some safe sailing and racing in.
