Social Life

For many yacht clubs, the doors close when the sailing season ends.  Not so at HYC!   We have a variety of social events that bring the members together throughout the year.

In January we gather for our annual “International Night” potluck dinner.  Members bring cuisine from many cultural backgrounds and the buffet is served by the board of directors.   Another popular event is the St. Patrick’s Day supper.   Members and their guests enjoy a traditional dinner of Corned Beef and Cabbage while enjoying Irish folk songs performed by live musicians.

Island night has become a club favorite with the centerpiece of the dinner being a spit roasted Pig.  Latin music and dancing complete with Island drink specials go on until the wee hours.  In 2011, we teamed Island night up with a new event; the HYC Cardboard Boat Race.   Members build canoe type boats from cardboard and enjoy a wet and wild race to the finish line!  This was a splashing success and it looks like it will become an annual tradition.  Click on the picture to see a video of the event

If Jazz music is your thing, you’ll want to make sure to mark your calendar for the Jazz nights that happen a few times a year, when we transform our upstairs ballroom into an intimate Jazz Club featuring award winning Jazz artists.

Of course sailing season would not be complete without the traditional Going Into Commission Going Out Of Commission ceremonies and dinners.  Live music, cocktails and fun are only part of part of these annual ceremonies.

In December, we celebrate the holidays with are annual Holiday / Staff Appreciation Brunch.   Santa arrives via water, carrying toys for our eagerly awaiting children.  A New Year’s Eve Dinner Dance ends the year with a bang!  There’s something for everybody, and this is only a partial list of the events that we enjoy as members of the Harlem Yacht Club!
