Club Boat Program
Documents for Club Boat Program
HYC owns several boats which are available for members to use at no charge. All you need to do is sign up for the club boat program and commit to two weekends a year maintaining the boats. We also require that you take a simple written test and demonstrate on the water that you can handle the boat safely.
The J/24 is the world's most popular keelboat, with over 5000 made. While its main claim to fame is as a racing boat, it also makes a great boat for just kicking around the bay on a lazy afternoon. It even sleeps 4, if you're all very friendly. Small and simple enough for two people to sail, it can take 5 or 6. With the genoa up, it moves nicely in gentle breezes that leave other boats parked. With the smaller jib, two people can manage in 20 kts of wind. It's also easy to single-hand with just the main.
HYC now owns two J/24's, which we make available to members of HYC at the Intermediate or Active Member level. Are there other places in New York City where you can sail a J/24? Yes there are, but a quick price comparison doesn't leave any doubt that this is the best deal in town. View calendar.
The JY15 was designed by Rod Johnstone (of the J Boats family and designer of the J/24) in 1989. This is the sportier of our two daysailers, which means it favors a more aggressive style of sailing. With 135 sq ft of sail area, it will sail faster than the Capri, and requires the crew to sit outboard on the gunwales. The crew hooks their feet under hiking straps, allowing them to lean out to balance the boat and keep it flat.
The JY15 is strictly a two-person boat, accommodating two adults or an adult and an older child. The boat weighs only 275 lbs, so it's easy to move around by hand on a small wheeled trailer. View calendar.
The Capri is a more sedate type daysailer, with full-length inboard seats in the cockpit. At 340 lbs, and a little less sail area (114 sq ft), it's more stable, and thus easier to sail than the JY15 for those who are less athletic. At the same time, it's still nimble enough to respond quickly and move in the lightest of breezes.
Like the JY15, the Capri is also equipped with hiking straps to allow the crew to move their weight outboard. Unlike the JY15, it will easily accommodate three adults or two adults and two children. It would be the daysailer of choice for a family. View calander.
The Howmar Hauler is a sailing dinghy. With a 43 inch beam and slightly over 8 feet of length it's typical of the small tenders cruisers use to scoot around anchorages after a day of sailing. It has an easy to rig and easy to handle lateen sail, similar to what's used on other small "bathing suit" boats. The Hauler is a good boat for a novice to practice sailing skills or an experienced sailor to while away a day "messing about" Eastchester Bay. View calendar.
